Nick Kyrgios Pulls Out of US Open to Complete Calendar Slam of Withdrawals

Nick Kyrgios will miss the US Open 2023, the organizers have confirmed his absence from this year’s edition of the tournament.

Nick Kyrgios has confirmed formally that he will not compete at this year’s US Open as the unfortunate injury streak doesn’t seem to get away. The Aussie is undergoing a physique-wise very bad season with the unhealed wrist that also kept him out of the Wimbledon – where he was a finalist at last year Championships – once again humbling his flamboyant being in a very happening calendar of tennis.

It seems the Australian ace was jinxed at last year’s Wimbledon final as he only managed to play just one official singles match of the injury-plagued season – a loss in Stuttgart Open earlier in June.

Hours before the Aussie withdrew from Wimbledon Championships, he was asked at a pre-tournament news conference if he missed the sport while on sidelines.

The One-time Wimbledon finalist replied: “No, I don’t miss the sport at all, to be fair. I was almost dreading coming back a little bit,” he said with the hint of a smile. “But it’s my job.”

Beset with injury problems in 2023, the 28-year old has been struggling with multiple physical issues, a prolonged knee issue and a wrist injury which have successfully forced the King Kyrgios to complete a calendar slam of withdrawals. Kyrgios was forced to withdraw from the Home Slam in Melbourne after sustaining a knee injury. The Australian after having arthroscopic surgery on his knee announced to make a surprise return at French Open for the first time since 2017. However, the plan fell through after he sustained a foot issue while resisting an arm robbery on his family home in Canberra.

The serve-bot did make a return to the ATP circuit by signing in for Stuttgart after an eight month layoff but was stopped by Yibing Wu in an unwelcoming straight sets defeat in the first round. After a disappointing start in his grass campaign, the Australian pulled out of Wimbledon and North American hard swing events (Atlanta, Citi Open, Toronto and Cincinnati) and finally the final Grand Slam of the year, US Open. Nick has also confirmed that he will miss the Laver Cup in late September.

He had the best year of his career in 2022 after reaching a career high ranking of #11 as well as making a GS Singles final at Wimbledon where he eventually lost to Novak Djokovic who earned his 7th crown at SW19.

Struggling with the injury woes in 2023, his best result in New York came yesteryear when he reached the quarters of the American Slam to eventually get knocked out by Russian Karen Khachanov.

The withdrawal of the Canberra-native means that former top 10 seed, Argentine’s Diego Schwartzman will get an entry pass to the event. German Jan-Lennard Struff has also withdrawn from the prestigious tourney allowing, Diego’s countryman Facundo Diaz Acosta to move to the main draw. The US Open beginning on Monday, August 28 will end on Sep 10.

Ranking Slump Imminent for Kyrgios

With the series of withdrawals from different tour level events, Kyrgios is set to further plummet in rankings in the injury-hit year.  He is currently ranked #127 in ATP rankings and will shed 45, 360 and 90 points from Cincinnati, US Open and Tokyo to complete the ranking slump. However, upon return, Kyrgios will be eligible to exercise the protected ranking protocol and wildcard care to compete once again.
