Coco Gauff by bagging Cincinnati has won the biggest title of her career as she overcame Karolina Muchova in the Championship match.
Gauff defeated the French Open runner-up 6-3, 6-4 to build momentum ahead of US Open by becoming the youngest ever Cincinnati Masters champion.
“It’s unbelievable, especially after everything I went through earlier in the summer in Europe,” said Gauff. “I am just happy to be here in this moment. I’d like to thank my lord and saviour Jesus Christ. There’s been a lot of nights crying, trying to figure it (my game) out. I still have a lot to figure out.”
The teenager had a disappointing Wimbledon Championships after being handed a 3-set R1 defeat by compatriot Sofia Kenin. Gauff, has since gone under the tutelage of Brad Gilbert who has formerly worked with Andre Agassi and Pere Riba. The coaching change seems working for the Gauff as she clinched the two biggest titles of her career after lifting trophies in Washington D.C. and Western and Southern Open.
The 19-year old reflected on the changes of the past few weeks, “I think the biggest thing that I’ve learned is that everybody’s path for you is not what’s true, it’s not what’s going to happen. Even the path that you want for yourself may not happen.”
Gauff with a couple of impressive triumphant runs, will now face higher expectations as she sets her sights on the home major that is scheduled go get underway at the end of August.
However, the young American doesn’t overestimates her newfound success, “I’m going to give it my all at the US Open. If things go great, that’s exciting. If not, I go back and work hard and get ready for the next one. That’s kind of the mentality you have to have.”
Gauff’s best result at the Flushing Meadows last year when she reached the quarterfinal. She will bid to improve her run when the final slam of the year kicks off on Monday, Aug 28.
