Sinner Surprised by His Dominance Against Medvedev in Miami

Jannik Sinner has admitted that even he is surprised by his incredible start to the season after routing Daniil Medvedev in the semis of the 2024 Miami Open.

The Italian also felt that it was a tough call to rate his dominant win over the Australian Open final heroics against the World No. 4 as it “was more special.”

Sinner came up with a strong performance to dismantle Medvedev 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour and 9 minutes in the final four of the Miami Open on Friday.

The 22-year-old is looking to win his second Masters 1000 crown and the first at Floridian Masters, after making runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2023. He will be up against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the final showdown on Sunday.

Sinner has now won five straight matches against Medvedev after losing the first 6 clashes with the lanky Russian.

The World #3 came back from two sets to love down to prevail against the former World No. 1 and 2021 US Open champion Medvedev earlier at the Australian Open and in process earned his first GS title.

Talking at the post-match press conference after beating Medvedev convincingly, Sinner commented on his incredible start to 2024.

“I am surprised, for sure. I mean, it’s something I was not expecting, for sure. But, you know, it also shows that I take everything day by day, and that’s what’s happening, it’s happening,” he said.

“You cannot really control everything. You just can control the emotions, the will to improve day by day, and that’s it. For sure, I’m really happy about the season I’m playing in. Who would not be happy?

“But in the other way, I know that the players, they get to know me more. They study me, so I have to be ready. I was struggling earlier in this tournament, as we saw, and it also shows that every day is different, no?

“Today I felt great on court. Maybe Sunday I will not feel great. I don’t know what will be happening, but it’s just day by day, and that’s it.”

Sinner was also asked if he played better against Medvedev in the Miami than Melbourne final.

“Yeah, different matchup, for sure, but I played very solid today, especially in the beginning of the sets. Then after, he missed couple of shots where usually he is not missing them,” Sinner assessed.

“Then when there is, even if the difference is quite small from one player to the other one, but if one plays a little bit better that day and the other player plays a little bit worse, sometimes the difference is big. Today it was like this.

“But in the other way, you have to be careful, because the score is this one, but if he breaks me early in the first set or if he breaks me with the break point he had on 2-1 in the second set, things are going to change from this to this (smiling).

“So we see only the score, but tactically today I felt very good, and I’m prepared even if the score would have been 3-all, 4-all, 5-all, and that’s it, no.

“It’s tough to say that this one was better than the other one. The other one was more special because of certain things, but I think that’s it.”
