Madison Keys’ emotional reaction to ‘dream’ Australian Open title and Aryna Sabalenka’s classy message

The 2025 Australian Open women’s final turned out to be an unforgettable spectacle of passion and drama, with Madison Keys emerging as the victor over Aryna Sabalenka, clinching her first Grand Slam title with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win.

With this victory, Keys etched her name in history, becoming the fourth-oldest woman to win her first major singles title and the oldest to defeat the world’s top two players in the same tournament. The triumph was even more remarkable given the caliber of opponents she had to overcome, including the defending champion herself, Sabalenka.

Once the final point was settled and the two players stood together for the trophy ceremony, the sportsmanship and mutual respect between the competitors were unmistakable. Sabalenka, ever gracious in defeat, was the first to speak, offering heartfelt praise to the new champion.

“First of all, Madison, wow,” began the world No. 1. “What a tournament. You’ve been fighting so hard to earn this trophy. Your tennis has been unbelievable, and tonight you truly crushed it.”

Sabalenka, who had dominated the Australian Open for the past two years, continued her tribute: “Congrats to you and your team. You’ve earned it. Enjoy your celebration, you deserve it. I also want to thank everyone who helped make this tournament happen, and for making me feel at home here. Even though I didn’t win this time, I’ll come back stronger next year. Thank you to all the fans for creating such an amazing atmosphere.”

Her remarks were met with warmth from the crowd, and even some lightheartedness, as Sabalenka turned to her team and joked: “Should I say anything to my team? Why are you laughing? It’s always your fault! I don’t want to see you for the next week – I really hate you!”

She finished with a smile, sending love to her supporters: “Thank you for everything. We gave our best, but Madison was incredible today. Next time I play her, I’ll bring better tennis. Love you, team!”

Once Sabalenka had left the podium, it was Madison Keys’ turn to lift the prestigious Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup, an emotional moment for the 29-year-old American. Fighting back tears, Keys addressed the crowd, acknowledging the significance of her triumph.

“Bear with me, because I’m absolutely going to cry,” Keys said, struggling to hold back her emotions. “I don’t think I can get through this without tears, so I apologize in advance!”

Turning to her opponent, Keys expressed admiration for Sabalenka’s skill and mental toughness, reflecting on their fierce rivalry. “Aryna, you’re an unbelievable player. I’m so glad I finally got you back,” Keys said, referring to the fact that she hadn’t beaten Sabalenka in nearly four years. “We always have the craziest matches. Congrats to you and your team for another fantastic Grand Slam run.”

Keys then addressed the crowd, grateful for the support throughout the tournament. “Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer us on over the last two weeks. I always feel so at home here,” she shared, her voice breaking with emotion. “I made my first Grand Slam semi-final here in Melbourne, so to win my first Grand Slam in the same place means the absolute world to me.”

Her speech turned more personal as she thanked those closest to her, especially her husband, Bjorn Fratangelo, who has been coaching her since June 2023. “I just want to thank my team,” she continued, trying to hold back tears. “I’ve wanted this for so long. I’ve been in one other Grand Slam final [at the 2017 US Open], and it didn’t go my way. I didn’t know if I’d ever be back in this position again.”

Keys expressed her gratitude for the unwavering support of her team, who believed in her even when she had doubts about herself. “My team believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. They were there for me every step of the way,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. “I love you all so much, and I can’t wait for more. I’m so thankful to every single person who helped me believe in myself and pushed me to achieve this dream.”

In the end, Madison Keys’ victory in Melbourne was not just the culmination of a thrilling final but also a testament to perseverance, belief, and the support of those who have been with her every step of the way.
