Novak Djokovic has closed yet another glorious season with a third major title in the year on Sunday as he sealed the US Open and the Serb is targeting the last big goal before the end of calendar.
Djokovic has already cemented his legacy as the most decorated player of all-time by extending his major count by registering a superb win against Daniil Medvedev in the final of US Open. With the completion of season-ending major, there are just a couple of big tourneys – Davis Cup, Shanghai Masters, Paris Masters and ATP Finals – that are to be played in the remaining 2023 season.
The Davis Cup Group stage is the next on the agenda of the US Open Champion who is returning to the team event after missing its 2022 edition. Serbia is scheduled to face hosts Spain, Czech Republic and South Korea in Valencia this coming week and the legend has confirmed that he will represent his country at the ITF event.
Djokovic has expressed his desire for the rest of the 2023 campaign which is to help Serbia qualify for the finals knockout stage and win the tournament.
“Right now, I just want to enjoy the success for a few days because I’m playing for Serbia in Davis Cup. I’m not going to play on Tuesday, but I’ll play on Friday and Saturday,” he is quoted as saying by Tennis Majors.
“Davis Cup is my priority until the end of the season.”
Serbia and Djokovic at Davis Cup
A Djokovic-less Serbia were knocked out in the Davis Cup group stage of yesteryear but reached semis in 2021. The last time they made it to the finals was 2013 when they finished runners-up to Czech Republic as hosts in Belgrade by losing 3-2.
Serbia only managed to win once at the team event under Djokovic in 2010 as he led the team to earn a 3-2 win against France. As for Djokovic’s record at the ITF-tournament, he has played a total of 45 singles matches to register a 38-7 win-loss record while maintaining 4-6 in doubles.
Novak Djokovic’s Schedule for the Remaining 2023 Season
After the conclusion of Davis Cup Group stages, the 4-time US Open champion will take an extended break from the sport and his Goran Ivanisevic who is a key member of the Serbian’s team has confirmed that he will not travel from the Asian swing which means the world No. 1 will not feature at the Shanghai Masters that is returning to the ATP circuit after a hiatus of three years because of Covid-19 pandemic.
In a build up to the season-ending year end finals in Turin, Djokovic is expected to participate in Paris Masters that starts on Oct 30 as the last masters 1000 event of the year. If Serbia makes it past group stages and qualifies for the Davis Cup finals knockout stage, then the Belgrade-native will conclude his season in Malaga, Spain.
