Jakub Mensik finds apt words to describe Novak Djokovic’s longevity

Jakub Mensik made headlines across the tennis world after pulling off a stunning upset to clinch his first-ever ATP Masters 1000 title, defeating none other than Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2025 Miami Open. But beyond the trophy, it was a jaw-dropping stat that truly left the teenage sensation speechless.

At just 19 years of age, Mensik stepped onto the court for his debut Masters final. His opponent? A battle-hardened legend featuring in his 60th title match at this level — the 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, who already had 40 Masters titles in his vault. The generational contrast was stark. In fact, the Miami Open marked Djokovic’s 133rd ATP 1000 appearance, and his first main draw outing in such an event dates all the way back to August 2005 — a time when Mensik hadn’t even taken his first breath.

That tidbit floored the young Czech.
“Oh, my God. It’s crazy. It’s just – I don’t know what to say (smiling). He’s just showing his dominance, like 2004 actually, I think it was, when I was not born.”
And when corrected that Djokovic played his first Masters match just 17 days before he was born, Mensik couldn’t help but joke:
“All right. Oh, wow. You read the Wikipedia before? (Laughter.)”

Mensik went on to marvel at Djokovic’s longevity in the sport, adding:
“No, no, no, I think that this, like I’m saying, it’s showing his dominance, like, 20 years ago he was already in the finals, and now 20 years later, he’s still in the finals.”

The two had previously shared court time in a practice session back in Belgrade. Djokovic, even then, had recognized the potential of the youngster standing across from him. According to the Serbian icon, Mensik had the aura of a future star in the making.

Reflecting on the monumental feat of defeating a player who has remained in the upper echelons of the sport for two decades, Mensik continued:
“So he’s top 5 still. So it’s just crazy and unbelievable what he’s achieving in this sport during long period of the time. Imagine me in 20 years from now, which I will be 39 playing the finals? I hope so, but it’s, yeah, it’s crazy, like, to think about it like this.”

The Miami Open final didn’t just mark Mensik’s first Masters crown — it was also his maiden ATP Tour singles title. After sealing the win, he penned “The first of many” on the broadcast camera lens — a bold and promising statement of intent.

Speaking after the triumph, Mensik exuded both gratitude and hunger — the kind of fire that champions are made of.
“It was just, of course, right now it’s the biggest win of my career so far, and I’m just super happy with that,” he shared.

Yet, the victory wasn’t enough to satisfy his growing ambition. With maturity beyond his years, he made it clear that this was only the beginning.
“But I know that this is not the end, and I know that this is just the beginning for me. I’m still 19 years old, so I have all of my career in front of me. Of course it feels really great to have this next to me, but it’s, you know, it’s not just about the one title, one tournament, but, you know, I’m hungry for more.”

There’s a clear sense that Mensik isn’t content with just making headlines for one magical week. He understands the grind, the growth, and the process needed to stay at the top.
“Right now I will celebrate, rest. When I will come back home, I’m going back to work and try to get better and better, because still there is a lot of space for improvement in my game, so I will, me and my team, will do my best to lift these trophies more often.”

With a giant-killing performance, a fearless mindset, and an appetite for more silverware, Mensik’s Miami breakthrough might just be the opening act of something special. Tennis fans could be witnessing the emergence of a new era — one where this 19-year-old continues to punch well above his weight and rewrite the script.
