Juan Martin del Potro has confirmed his desire to return to the professional tennis, revealing that he has left the window open for a special tournament. The Argentine last appearance on the ATP tour came in February 2022 when he played his last game in front of a packed arena in Buenos Aires; he lost the Round of 32 game to Federico Delbonis in Court Guillermo Vilas.
Many considered it to be a farewell game for the Del Potro with 34-year old gentle giant admitting his struggles with the wrist and knee injuries, however, the forehand killer now thinks that he still has that in body and would like to have a last hurrah on a tour already taken over by promising next-gen.
“I still have time, I will start training, see how my leg and knee react and if I can do it or not,” said Del Potro. “I love tennis, it will never be a problem to pick up a racquet and see how I feel.”
Eyeing a potential and very special return, at the US Open, – the only Slam the Argentine has won – the Argentine who appears to be hopeful is also at the same time realistic with his chances.
“The physical problem and my knee are things I work on every day. I’m going to leave that window open, at least until the US Open, as I said. This is the most special tournament for me,” claimed a classy Juan.
The former World No. 3 became a US Open titlist in 2009 as a 20-year-old South American phenomenon by registering a historic triumph against Roger Federer in a 5-set epic. He bagged his last win over Federer in American hard court swing at Indian Wells in 2018. A genuine threat and real competition to the Big 4 in his prime, Del Potro has total of 22-career titles on the ATP tour.
