Jannik Sinner proved revealed everyone why his a top 10 player and a genuine threat in the Grand Slams for everyone. He once again showed up his mettle against the 3-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka.
Sinner outlasted the aging Swiss with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in his R3 encounter of the US Open. Young Italian claimed that he is wearing another level of confidence after clinching the Toronto Masters title and can right now best any player in the world.
However, despite locking Wawrinka in four sets, Sinner wasn’t particularly satisfied with his game but he insisted that he gets confidence when winning a match by not playing his best. It has been four long years since Wawrinka defeated the 22-year-old who now leads their series 4-2.
“Obviously in four years a couple of things have changed, but I’m happy about my performance today,” said Sinner in his on-court interview.
“I feel I wasn’t playing at my best, as he wasn’t playing at his best, but in key moments I handled it in a better way than him and I’m happy to be in the next round.”
Sinner won his maiden Masters 1000 title in Montreal and is currently relishing 44-12 win-loss season.
He could rise further in and enter the top 5 slot in the ATP Rankings for the first time after the US Open if he manages to defeat Alexander Zverev or Grigor Dimitrov in the R4, but the National Bank Open champion doesn’t appear to get ahead of himself.
“The confidence level is a little bit different,” said Sinner. “I’m very happy to be in the second week of a Grand Slam again, it always means a lot. Hopefully I can raise my level every time I play, knowing that every time I step on court I’m trying to give it my best shot. Let’s see how the next round goes.”
Sinner cherishes tough moments during the majors and is a proponent of pressure is the privilege slogan.
“When you go through tough moments throughout the whole week and you’re able to manage them in the best possible way,” Sinner said. “I think that’s the best feeling.”
The Italian is ever interested to build on his Canadian Open title and capitalize on his good start at the New York major.
“For sure you have to be happy because it’s a good achievement,” Sinner said.
“But in the other way I also know that I can still improve my tennis and just look forward to the work. And so hopefully I can keep going, keep practising in the way we do and then we’ll see.”
